Ava started skating with Ladies Shred when she was 12 years old, now six years later she's joined our team as a coach to promote all that Ladies Shred encompasses. She's a leader, activist, amazing chef, world traveler, fearless skater, and encouraging coach.
Her humor and kindness are just two of the qualities we love to see when working with new boarders.
Her love for skating is just as fierce as her taking slams.
Ava will be one of our coaches this summer!

Katie has been co-hosting skate night at Proof Lab with Lil for 5 years. When Katie is in her mid fifties now and started skating at 40, inspired by her kids and friends who were having so much fun. She started very slowly. She learned how to push and tictac as a kid but she felt sorely out of shape. Through her commitment to have fun her skills have skyrocketed along with her passion. She gets joy for making small achievements for herself both physically and mentally as well as watching others do the same. We at Ladies Shred are stoked to have her with us.
Hello and welcome to the Ladies Shred website, my name is Lilja (pronounced Lil-Ya), but most call me Lil.
I grew up here in Marin County and discovered an incredible passion for learning and coaching surf and skate back in 2012.
I fell in love with the rhythm of the board sports, how riders look so effortless and graceful (even as they took brutal slams).
I've also always loved falling (being a gymnast and competitive cheerleader as a youth) surfing and skating seemed like a perfect fit. Sports that encourage individuality, community and most importantly persistence.
The road to Ladies Shred has definitely been an interesting one. I began learning tricks when I was 17 years old after gaining employment at Proof Lab Surf Shop. Before I knew it I was helping coach at Big Dog Surf Camp during the summers, learning the ins and outs of surfing. Then working for surf/skate camps and coaches all over Marin.
In 2013 I asked PL if I could host a skate night for women on Friday nights, they were happy to oblige. Here Ladies Shred was born.
What began as a way to meet other ladies who shred turned into a beautiful teaching opportunity, encouraging youth from as young as 3 years old to 50 years old. No one is ever too old to skate.
My philosophies lie in taking slams and hopping back up, testing our boundaries yet respecting them, holding space for others, and creating environments in inclusivity while highlighting the empowerment of GIRLS.
When we support each other we grow.
When we come together we create change.
This is what I stand for and this is what Ladies Shred will always be.
Not all of us feel comfortable busting into the line up or showing up at the skatepark with little to no skill. This is why ladies shred is important, it is a space for those of us who don't feel like we fit in with the pop culture that is skating or surfing.
That being said this is also a place for those who identify as girls, non-binary, and yes for the boys too! We love all those that are searching for something a little kinder, something a bit slower.
We will always encourage you to move to the beat of your own drum!
